It’s all Conceptual Chiropractic. Look deep for what’s hidden. A Modernist Punk demanding attention whilst her Zen draws from somewhere more profound; A harmony of sorts. “Which one do you like better?”, it’s the existential question of a child that we all attempt and ironically there’s no correct answer. So I’m saying, we’re all in this together. It’s a soup. Define your world and the universe laughs, but we are doing it; making thoughts, living them out, listening to the “outer” world screaming, whilst the “inner” world sleeps. There’s an alarm sounding somewhere amidst political unrest, environmental fragility, media hype; it’s the stuff on the surface, meanwhile the core has remained unchanged. We know too much of nothing, so little of everything. Whatever, we’ll get there. State of mind has a lot to do with our capacity to really “see”. The mind often becomes habituated and resistant to perception. My works act as bridges and descriptions to states of awareness somewhat meditative in nature. I am fascinated by the 16th Century Koans of the Eastern Buddhist masters, designed to trick the conceptual mind and prepare it for non-conceptual thought. Attaining a relaxed, aware, non-judgemental state of mind opens “another world”, one that, for me is best described by way of abstraction. My paintings describe these two introspective worlds; one preparatory for the other. Using provocative textual messages in the existent “language based” frame-work of the Western Mind (obviously less erudite than Hakuin Ekaku’s, "Two hands clap and there is a sound; what is the sound of one hand?" Oral tradition, 1686-1769), my textual works come from a contemporary Western view. The other introspective “world” described in my abstract works, requires a deeper form of contemplation: A Visual Koan of sorts. Nothing obvious is being represented here and yet the works are bold statements. c. Mesha Sendyk
